WHAT IS S.T.E.A.M?
S.T.E.A.M is the acronym for the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. Simply put, S.T.E.A.M is the future generation of makers, creators, thinkers, problem solvers, and inventors. We take an integrated approach to S.T.E.A.M learning helping kids make connections across disciplines to build a strong foundation of S.T.E.A.M literacy. With a fluency and comfort with S.T.E.A.M students can head out into their communities and the world, prepared to make an impact on the issues that interest them.
ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION:
“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in S.T.E.M to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.”
Nok Bots is inspired by Stem Ecosystems, learning ecosystems that are composed of schools, museums, science centers, universities, privates businesses, and community-based organizations, all working together to offer high-quality educational programs and experiences for children with an emphasis on cross-collaborative and cross-disciplinary S.T.E.A.M learning.
Children are natural scientists. In our programs they learn to investigate the world around them using the scientific method. Through this method students learn about astronomy, chemistry, physics, earth science, biology, and other science topics by observing, forming questions, making predictions, designing and carrying out experiments, and testing their theories.
Technology is any man-made object. Through mastering the use of simple tools and technologies like pulleys, wheels, levers, axels, and ramps, children learn the underlying cause and effects of S.T.E.AM and improve their cognitive flexibility and problem-solving skills. Our programs build on these simpler technologies and allow children to understand how more advanced tools like computers, laptops, iPads, robots, help us accomplish tasks.
Engineering applies science, math, and technology to solving problems. Engineering is using materials to design, craft, and build. Engineering helps us understand how and why things work. Through employing the scientific method, our young engineers learn to build sound structures and engineer solutions to many S.T.E.A.M related challenges.
The Arts include many subjects like the Fine Arts, Music, and the Literary Arts. At Nok Bots, we focus on the Movement Arts. Science comes alive through the study of Marital Arts, Yoga, Gymnastics, Archery and Kali. Art gives us a core understanding of ourselves, our abilities, and our environment.
Math is a tool we use everyday and it's used in almost all fields of science. Through movement and S.T.E.A.M students in our programs explore math concepts like geometry, pattern, sequence, volume, distance, efficiency, measurement, spacial sense, averages, accuracy.
