WHAT IS NOK BOTS?

Nok Bots is an out-of-school S.T.E.A.M Club where kids learn to move and move to learn.

Our programs combine martial arts training with high-quality interactive S.T.E.A.M programming for children ages 5 to 12. Through our after-school classes, camps, and weekend workshops students explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics  (S.T.E.A.M.) while using their bodies as a tool for learning.

Through movement training children experience firsthand the fundamental physics principles that govern the physical world around them and have fun applying that knowledge directly to S.T.E.A.M challenges and experiments using Lego bricks and other materials. Students use Lego® bricks and other technologies to engineer structures,, construct simple and complex machines, program robots, code games, animate movies, and much more!

MAT WORK

LAB WORK

On the Mats, students work together to build their Muay Thai technique, fine-tune their alignment in Archery, or master the angular stick work in Kali.  We create a low-pressure learning environment where students of all skill levels can build a foundation of strength, agility, and coordination. Movement helps us strengthen our bodies, but it also improves the health and performance of our brains by sharpening cognition, increasing memory and enhancing our ability to concentrate. Once we are warmed up, students get ready to tackle S.T.E.A.M challenges in the Lab!

Our martial arts school transforms into a laboratory of experimentation where students explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M) while using their bodies as a tool for learning. Students build a foundation of engineering skills through experimenting with basic building techniques, using gears, pulleys, levers, and axles to design and construct simple machines, complex machines, and other structures. Working in teams of two, children have a blast constructing and programming robots, coding games and animating stop-motion movies. The entire studio is their laboratory where they can spread out, test their builds, and experiment with the possibilities of each technology.

Our programs are dynamic and full of movement. Both on the mats and in the lab, our instructors use direct and indirect teaching methods to keep kids of all skill levels engaged and learning.

In the lab, students work low to the ground and are free to stretch-out, squirm, and wiggle while they work. Our programs incorporate helpful stretch, relaxation, and exercise techniques kids can use to help them regulate their energy and focus their attention.

LEARNING IS COLLABORATIVE. 

Students work together on the mats, they work collectively as a group to set-up and break-down their workspace, and they team-up in the lab to find creative solutions. Working together in pairs, and collectively as a group helps kids build important social and collaboration skills.

Martial artists and scientists understand that mastery in a discipline is achieved over time and after many set-backs. We encourage children to mess up, to make mistakes, and to learn through discovery.

THE MOVEMENT ARTS WE EXPLORE

Students have the opportunity to try a variety of different Martial Arts forms and movement disciplines in a fun, dynamic, and low-pressure learning environment. Our programs incorporate movement arts like Muay Thai, Kali, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Archery, Yoga, and Gymnastics taught by professional athletes and coaches. 

 

MUAY THAI

Muay Thai is the national sport and cultural martial art of Thailand. It was developed several hundreds of years ago as a form of close-combat fighting that that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. Muay Thai is referred to as “The Art of Eight Limbs” as it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, and shins. Students have the opportunity to safely study the precise and elegant martial art of Muay Thai under the guidance of our professional athletes and coaches. 

Our programs with Muay Thai explore topics including the physics of forces, speed, momentum, velocity, potential energy, kinetic energy, aerodynamics, oscillation and mechanics. 

GYMNASTICS

Gymnastics is a sport in which athletes perform acrobatic feats like leaps, flips, turns, handstands and more. Gymnastics training helps to improve balance, strength, flexibility, coordination and endurance. In our gymnastics programs, students build a foundation of strength and agility while learning to roll, flip, jump, tumble, and balance from expert instructors.  
 

Our programs with gymnastics explore topics including the physics of forces,, including, center of mass, force, velocity, potential energy, kinetic energy, angular velocity, torque, rotation, acceleration and inertia through gymnastics training. 

KALI

Kali is a Filipino martial art form that incorporates open-hands, stick, and weapons-based training from the Philippines. Filipino martial arts are considered the most advanced practical modern blade system in the world and are core components of the United States Special Forces Military training as well as for many other elite forces around the world. Through the use of safe nerf-like sticks and protective gear, our Kali ninjas work on the timing, accuracy, foot work, and angular stick work needed to master this exceptional martial art and self-defense system.

 

Our programs with Kali explore topics including timing, pattern, force, momentum, acceleration, velocity, rotation, distance, kinetic and potential energy, dynamics, and angular impact.

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling orientated martial art form that focuses on getting an opponent to the ground in order to neutralize possible strength or size advantages through important ground fighting techniques and other methods. Jiu-Jitsu can be traced back to India where it was practiced by Buddhist monks who created techniques based upon principles of balance and leverage, and a system of manipulating the body in a manner where one could avoid relying upon size, strength, or weapons.

 

Our programs with BJJ explore topics including the physics of forces, torques, stability and rotational motion., mass, velocity, acceleration, leverage and center of gravity.

ARCHERY

Archery is the practice or skill of using a bow to shoot arrows. Target archery is the most popular form of modern competitive archery in the world and also an Olympic sport. Archers shoot at stationary circular targets from set distances, and a number of different kinds of bow can be used in competition, including the recurve, the compound, and the longbow. As a sport, archery requires skills of precision, control, focus, repetition and determination. It is an all-abilities activity that helps students develop critical focus and concentrations skills.

Our programs with archery explore topics including momentum, velocity, acceleration, potential energy, kinetic energy, elasticity, trajectory, aerodynamics, Hooke's Law, oscillation, deceleration, and mechanics.

YOGA

The word Yoga means “union” in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India where Yoga originates from. Yoga is a system of physical exercises or postures called asanas. When practiced regularly along with yogic breathing techniques these asanas build strength, flexibility, confidence and contribute to an overall sense of well-being. Through Yoga training students learn how to move more freely and with a greater sense of ease and awareness. Yoga practice builds strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and helps young learners to harness their energies creatively.

 

Our programs with Yoga  explore topics including center of mass, balance, levers, oscillation, inertia of motion, rotation, equilibrium, alignment, aerodynamics, mechanics, and energy conservation and management. 

THE TECHNOLOGIES WE USE

LEGO® WeDo & WeDo 2.0

LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 is a hands-on STEM solution that combines the LEGO brick, software, engaging standards-based projects and a discovery based approach. Students are introduced to computational thinking and engineering principles in a fun and engaging way.

Scratch

With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations and share your creations with others in the online community. Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, andwork collaboratively.

Sphero® Edu

Sphero SPRK is a spherical robot that can be controlled in real time on an app on a mobile device. Its shell is made of tough, transparent polycarbonate, allowing students to see the relationship between their commands and the electric motor and LEDs inside. 

Animation Studio® 

Animation Studio is complete animation software for students to create original stop motion animation films.  Kids can add voice-over using the integrated microphone. The easy-to-use software allows students to play their movies back at any time, import or record music and sounds, add text and special effects, copy, edit, move and delete frames and much more.
